What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement?

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is a treatment to alleviate the symptoms caused by imbalanced hormones or a natural drop in hormone production due to aging.

This treatment is called “bioidentical” or sometimes “natural” because the types of hormones used are biologically identical on a molecular level to those produced in the body.

Some of the hormones that BHRT works to balance include those associated with youth and fertility, such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones.

Hormones naturally decrease as we age, and the body begins to break down. Hormone production peaks in adults age 20-30 on average. When we reach our mid 30’s these hormone levels begin their decline, which will continue for the remainder of our lives.

Symptoms of imbalanced or low hormones levels can be noticeable, or in some instances so subtle that one only notices after levels are restored, of course, this can vary for each individual.

Symptoms Of Fall In The Hormonal Level

Hot Flashes/Night Sweats

Decreased Libido

Noticeable loss of energy and motivation

Cessation of the menstrual cycle

Vaginal Dryness

Dry skin

Mood changes/emotional instability like irritability and anxiety

Mid-section weight gain

Difficulty sleeping and concentrating

How to know if I need BHRT?

The first step is to consult a BHRT specialist who will perform blood tests in order to determine the specific deficit or imbalance that must be addressed.

Patients are asked to describe their symptoms, which also helps determine the next step in their treatment. At this point, the specialist will ask for a custom prescription compound and start the treatment plan.

Some benefits of BHRT

Many studies have found that estrogen and testosterone have benefits to prevent bone loss, and research suggests that BHRT can help defend against osteoporosis; thanks to this study is attributed to the decreasing hormone levels the loss of energy, depression, lack of sleep, weight gain, among other symptoms.
